A Clockwork Orange

Story : Alex, a teenage hooligan in a near-future Britain, gets jailed by the police. There he volunteers as guinea pig for a new aversion therapy proposed by the government to make room in prisons for political prisoners. "Cured" of his hooliganism and released, he is rejected by his friends and relatives. Eventually nearly dying, he becomes a major embarrassment for the government, who arrange to cure him of his cure. A pivotal moment is when he and his gang break into an author's home: the book he is writing (called "A Clockwork Orange") is a plea against the use of aversion therapy, on the grounds that it turns people into Clockwork Oranges (Orang is Malay for "Man"): they are not being good from choice (sentiments later echoed by the prison chaplain). The film reflects this: many bad scenes in a Clockwork Orange are accompanied by jolly music; if we are to experience them as we should, we have to do it consciously, by realising they are bad, and not because the director tells us so through the use of music and images.

Story : Richard David Kimble is a pediatrician living in Stafford, IN, a suburb some 75 miles from Indianapolis. His wife is Helen Waverly-Kimble, a former nurse whom he met while a hospital intern. In 1961 they are to have a baby, but their baby dies upon being born and Helen can physicially no longer bear children. When Richard Kimble wants to adopt a child, Helen objects, and the disagreement stresses their relationship until, on the fateful night of September 19, 1961, Richard storms out of their house after another bitter quarrel. After a drive, he cools off and returns home, but as he arrives he sees a heavyset man running out of his house and nearly strikes him. The man's image burns into Kimble's pysche; heavyset, with short black hair, saddish eyes, mildy cherubish complexion, and his right arm below the elbow is missing. The man (who will eventually be identified as Fred Johnson) runs off, and Kimble rushes into his house - to find Helen lying on the floor, dead. The Stafford PD's investigation uncovers no one-armed man matching Kimble's description, and he is charged with Helen Kimble's murder, convicted, and sentenced to the electric chair. But in March 1963, while being escorted by the investigating officer of Helen's murder, Lieutenant Philip Gerard, the train on which both men are riding derails, and in the crash Kimble becomes seperated from Gerard. Now free, Kimble flees into the night, and his journey begins, as he traverses the country, searching for Fred Johnson, the one-armed vagrant who killed Helen Kimble, and helping others he meets in his travels. All the while he must stay one step ahead of Philip Gerard, who blames himself for Kimble's escape and who is determined to bring the Fugitive to justice, despite doubts within his own mind as to Kimble's guilt

This film is more of a travelogue that you'll never see on public TV. It's actually pretty good in a haunting way. The Hobbit House still exists in Manila. Apparently it does great business despite the constantly changing owners. The prostitution scenes were clearly exaggerated. And did anyone else notice the shark fishermen (In footage seen previously in Mondo Cane.) were all missing the same limb. (Except for the poor guy missing both arms.) I get the impression part 1 and 2 were filmed on the same trip. Both had a lot of sex and violence in them but not so much to cause disgust. except maybe the sex-change operation in part 1. I wonder how many of those places still exist the way they were. I live in Asia and sometimes wonder. My Japanese friends thought this doc was a scream.

The 1970's Italian-made WIP films were few and far between and didn't really achieve either the action of of US-Filipino versions or the unmitigated sleaze of the Jess Franco ones (they were also overshadowed by the far more sleazy Italian "Nazi sexploitation" films of the era). The 1970's Italian WIP films usually weren't pure WIP films. "Women in Cellblock 7" is more of a Italian crime thriller. "Escape from a Woman's Prison" is more of hostage drama or a "terror" film. And this is partly a "nunsploitation" film since all the jailers here are nuns for some reason

Story : Set at some point during the thirties or forties, Japan is at war with China. During an attack on the Chinese forces, the Japanese capture four Western Generals. Fearing that if this news were to reach their troops it would affect their morale greatly, the Chinese hire Captain Don Wen (Jimmy Wang Yu) to form a commando squad and get the Generals back in four days. Don decides to regroup his old squad (consisting of thief Old Sun [Sun Yeuh], escape artist Grease Lightning [Gou Ling Feng], con artist Billy [David Tao] and his ex-girlfriend Lily [Brigitte Lin], the bumbling and apparently unnamed General [Fong Ching] and his buddy Stone [Shiu Bu Lia]) one last time to get the Generals back. Don is apparently killed in an attack but the group continues on regardless, with the aid of ex-wrestler Sammy (Jackie Chan in a small role) and his former manager Emily (Chang Ling) who trail the group to make sure they stay alive, so they'll have a share of the reward. Towards the end, the previously comical film takes a bizzare turn and climaxes at a Japanese bunker where the group go kamakaze and fight off a small army in the hope that the last survivor will be able to claim the reward. But are the Japanese the only villians?
