Dead Man

Dead man

Story : Dead Man is the story of a young man's journey, both physically and spiritually, into very unfamiliar terrain. William Blake travels to the extreme western frontiers of America sometime in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Lost and badly wounded, he encounters a very odd, outcast Native American, named "Nobody," who believes Blake is actually the dead English poet of the same name. The story, with Nobody's help, leads William Blake through situations that are in turn comical and violent. Contrary to his nature, circumstances transform Blake into a hunted outlaw, a killer, and a man whose physical existence is slowly slipping away. Thrown into a world that is cruel and chaotic, his eyes are opened to the fragility that defines the realm of the living. It is as though he passes through the surface of a mirror, and emerges into a previously-unknown world that exists on the other side

Blue Belgium

Blue Belgium

Story : Author: An Depuydt from Leuven, Belgium wrote on IMDB
Starting with an image of the Atomium in Brussels, "Blue Belgium" intends to give the watcher a possible explanation for what went wrong in Belgium during the last two decades, going from the raids of the "gang of Nijvel", over "pink ballets" and "virgin hunting parties", to the Dutroux-affair. The story connects all this events - made up or real - in a plot-theory being a right-wing attempt to evoke agitation in the country and seize power. Up to that point, I have no complaints. Where things really go wrong is in how this is done. First of all, none of the "actors" seem to be bothered by any acting qualities nor decent knowledge of the English pronunciation, the story is sewed together by the one improbable event after the other, the sound track is purely imbecile ("On the road again" when they are driving a car), and there is not the least attempt to sustain any internal logic, not to mention the technical "qualities" of this creation. In other words: Ed Wood would have done better !It is clear that this is a very cheap attempt to earn some quick money on an international eager-for-sensation video-watching audience. In principle there is nothing wrong with that as long as they would keep it away from real movie houses and as long as the director and his crew would not be that conceited (or simply naive ?) to expect some applause for "daring to treat this national taboo" (his words !). Ashamed to be a Belgian !

The Magician of Lublin

The Magician of Lublin

Story : Author: peter-1080 from United States wrote on IMDB
Arkin spares nothing of himself in what I consider one of his finest roles. The story is both incredibly painful and liberating (the Bladerunner writer must have read this story by Singer). This movie is not for the emotionally faint of heart, but it is so incredibly honest there are great rewards. For those studying translating literature to film, I would suggest this (as well as the Bill Murray version of The Razor's Edge) as worthy case studies. Also, for a period piece, The Magician of Lublin exposes an interesting time in Europe, both for the sexual mores of the time and the existent seeds of anti-Semitism that served as a precursor to the Twentieth Century.

Tour de Sex de France

(Cours du soir pour monsieur seul)

Story : Author: Tearless from Brussels, Belgium wrote on IMDB:
A silly warehouse manager receives an anonymous letter accusing his wife of cheating him with another man. His friend, a real playboy, advises him to see a female psychiatrist, who seems to be a real nympho. Then his friend introduces him to his cycle of girlfriends … Duval plays the role of his girlfriend Madly. Earl plays a photo model that engages in a lesbian encounter with a colleague. This is a mediocre near hardcore comedy in the french and Latin style from this period. Mediocre cinematography. Interesting because a whole bunch of adult french starlets from the early period of adult filming appear. The acting is acceptable and the storyline is more or less logic. The video box of this Holland edition states Jean-Pierre Marise as the director.
